How to Become a Member
Sangha “membership” classes are offered in the spring and fall as a gift to the participants from Rev. David Phears and the Board of Trustees. The class, which lasts for about 5 hours on a Saturday morning, explains the operations of the church, talks about the underlying spiritual philosophy, presents Sangha’s educational opportunities, and introduces many of the leaders of the church. On the following Friday evening, a festive potluck dinner is held in the Gathering Place.

Upon completion of the class, the congregant is given the opportunity to pledge his or her membership to Sangha during Sunday Morning Service in a heartwarming welcome and commitment ceremony conducted by Rev. David.

Of course, there is no obligation to join the church after participating in the class, but all are invited to become members of this loving spiritual community. The next membership class will be offered in the autumn of 2008. We'll announce the date when it's set.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Our Name Addition
As a result of voting* at our meeting of Members on Sunday, October 29, 2006, we are now Huntington Beach Church of Religious Science, dba (doing business as) Sangha, Center for Spiritual Living. “Center for Spiritual Living” parallels our parent church's dba name, “Centers for Spiritual Living.” “Sangha” is our church's unique name.

* 66 member votes were submitted at the meeting. Of the 66 votes, 52 (78%) were in favor of this name addition, and 14 were in favor of keeping our existing name without any addition.
What is a Sangha?
Sangha is a Buddhist term. It refers to a group of like-minded people who serve to support each other spiritually. To "seek refuge" in a Sangha is to join with others who will be present for you when you experience challenges and who will celebrate with you when you have triumphs. Each member of this group serves as the mirror of light for the others in the community.

Thich Nhat Hanh, the Buddhist monk who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King, Jr., explains the importance of a Sangha in this way:

“It is well worth investing in a Sangha. If you sow seeds in arid land, few seeds will sprout. But if you select a fertile field and invest your wonderful seeds in it, the harvest will be bountiful. Building a Sangha, supporting a Sangha, being with a Sangha, receiving the support and guidance of a Sangha is the practice. We have individual eyes and Sangha eyes. When a Sangha shines its light on our personal views, we see more clearly. In the Sangha, we won't fall into negative habit patterns. Stick to your Sangha. Take refuge in the Sangha, and you’ll have the wisdom and support you need.”
The Heart of Buddha's Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh
